Details

Summary
Microchip Technology acquired SMSC in 2012, and all current products
and datasheets refer to the devices supported by this driver as
Microchip parts. Mention SMSC in a parenthetical comment to explain
the driver's name.

Why though?

The domain in the source code doesn't resolve anymore. The acquisition happened long enough ago that it seems more confusing to reference the now-defunct company name while the parts are still in active production and use. In my case I was looking at a Microchip eval board (EVB-LAN8670-USB for 10 BASE T1S) that uses the LAN9500A part and it was not immediately obvious that smsc(4) is the driver for this part.
